Success is not always a monetary award in the music business. History has proven that R&B singers of the past have continued to pursue their dreams in spite of the economic benefits. A stream of R&B groups have been on the top of the charts and still have nothing to show for it. The Temptations, signed to Motown Records, was one of the hottest groups of their time. In spite of it all they had hits after hits, but to this day they still have to tour to get paid. New Edition, signed to MCA Records, was one of the hottest young groups of the last two decades. New Edition inspired the majority of all groups that have come and gone in the last 25 years. One group in particular is Boyz II Men. Boyz II Men has had major success and the economics to go with it, because of New Edition’s Michael Bivins. Although Mike experiences a stream of greedy labels, mentors, and agents, he used his knowledge and expertise to guide Boyz II Men to major success. So once again I say that it’s truly the love for music that keeps the Temptations, New Edition, active and together and touring even to this day. (Jet, Nov 15, 2004 by Margena A. Christian)

Standing The Test Of Time
The purpose of this blog is to help up incoming vocal groups to understand what it takes to last in the industry as well as enlighten others that have wondered why most groups do not last. Groups like The O’Jays, Temptations, New Editon, all have one thing in common, they have mastered the art of staying together. There are many sacrifices that must be made to hold together a strong unity among groups. One thing that needs to be established from day on is mutual respect, but there are many factors that must be considered. You must first be vocally compatible, understanding and forthright. The number one reason for separation among groups is the lack of knowledge of the business as a whole. I said business; many people forget that groups are a business including the groups. Too many times artists have signed a contract that they didn’t understand. Even when seeking an Entertainment Attorney, the artists still need to know what they want out of the deal. I encourage anyone who is trying to get into any kind of business to research it. Lack of knowledge can be quite costly. Another reason for the departure of groups is the rising star factor that so many members have experienced. This is when a member starts to thinking they are larger than the group itself. Overall, in order to make it last, all members have to separate themselves from the rest of the world and really stay focused on what got them there.
